Severnside Group

was formed in May 1997 from which time the membership has grown steadily, currently standing at around 200. Like most Groups, the majority of our members do not walk with us or attend our social gatherings but support us in other ways, consequently we get around 10-15 people on our walks, a manageable number which has given Severnside a reputation for its friendliness and sociability.

We arrange walks each weekend as well as midweek evenings in the summer. The area and length of the walk varies greatly as you can see from the programme on our Walks Page and is the choice of the leader. Our midweek walks are rarely more that 4 miles and often end with an optional hostelry visit. Members also arrange occasional weekends away, past trips have taken us to Shropshire, Dartmoor, the Brecon Beacons, Devon, Cornwall and the Brendon Hills.

We also have regular social events such as skittles evenings, quiz nights, barbecues and the like, and there is always a celebratory dinner held over the Christmas period.

However, We are more than just a walking club. The Ramblers' is a registered charity and one of the charitable aims is to campaign to keep the footpath network open, and we do our best to ensure that unwalkable rights of way are brought to the Council's attention.

Severnside would like to send our walk programmes and newsletters to members electronically, by email. This will save us printing and postage costs, and will ensure members receive their programmes on time, and can receive late-breaking updates and news.

The Ramblers' Association

is Britain's biggest charity working to promote walking and to improve conditions for all walkers. With over 138,000 members in England, Scotland and Wales, we've been working for walkers for 70 years.

Through our network of dedicated volunteers and staff, we support all who walk, from beginners to experienced enthusiasts, family groups to solitary strollers and the very young to the young at heart. We have over 500 Groups across Great Britain, organised into around 50 Areas, including around 50 Groups for 20s-30s and family walking groups.

As an environmental organisation, we work to encourage walking, open up public footpaths, protect the countryside. We have been involved in many importants campaigns and it is largely through our work that today's legally-protected network of public footpaths exists.

We have also been at the forefront of several key campaigns to protect the environment, such as the fight to stop the privatisation of Forestry Commission land and have long been at the forefront of the fight to stop opencast mining. We also work against other threats to the natural environment, such as housing developments on green field sites and hedgerow destruction.
